Academic Assistance Group

Academic Assistance Group (AAG) is a board made up of PBHS alumni, parents, and Poplar Bluff citizens who are dedicated to promoting academic excellence. AAG Funds mini-grants for high school teachers and sponsors such programs as college night, college rap session, and academic letters.

Established in 1990, according to school records, the AAG is the ‘booster club’ for all academic departments and functions at PBHS. Its mission is to supplement the instructional needs of teachers that may not have been included in applicable budgets, or educational opportunities that may have arisen during the school year.

Your generous support has funded many exciting events for PBHS students. A recent AAG mini-grant allowed the Applied Biology and Chemistry students to travel to Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Dauphin Island, Alabama, where they studied marine biology and barrier reef and oceanography topics. Another mini-grant made it possible for students to participate in Youth Adventure; they boarded a bus and followed the trail of the civil rights movement of the 60’s from Memphis, through Alabama and Mississippi to Atlanta. The AAG also paid for admission to the St. Louis Art Museum for Humanities students, provided funds for travel by the Literary Club, and purchased two computers and software for music students. The software helps the students learn fundamental music skills.

College Night is held each fall and features a panel of parents whose children are attending colleges and universities. These parents offer suggestions and give guidance to parents and students who are about to embark on the college applications process. College Rap Session is held in early January. Recent PBHS graduates who are enrolled at various colleges and universities share their collegiate experiences with high school students.

AAG is dependent on fundraising and donations. To donate directly to the AAG, contact guidance counselor Tamara Day at 573-785-6471.
