The Poplar Bluff R-I School District is comprised of approximately 5,300 students, 400 professional staff and 300 support staff, and has an operational budget in excess of $45 million. Our goal, in partnership with parents and community, is to educate all students to their potential, and to inspire them to be lifelong learners, who possess the skills and knowledge necessary to be productive members in our changing world.
2010 Winner, 100 Best Communities for Young People
In 2010, Butler County, Missouri, was named one of America’s Promise Alliance 100 Best Communities for Young People, achieving recognition in part for collaborative mentoring efforts launched within Poplar Bluff Public Schools:
“Junior High counselors in Poplar Bluff Schools launched a mentoring program in 2002 after seeing a need for positive role models in the lives of at-risk students. The Teen Parent Mentoring program matches young mothers with experienced mothers as mentors, and provides parenting education and access to needed services. Since 2004, 344 girls from Butler County have participated in the program and only 12 had repeat pregnancies. Eighty completed the program during the 2009-2010 school year, and 90 percent maintained their child’s immunizations, while nearly all completed their educational requirements including promotion to next grade level, high school graduation, or obtaining their GED.” Read more »
About Poplar Bluff
Located in southeast Missouri, Poplar Bluff is named for the dense growth of tulip poplar trees on the bluff of the Black River, which flows through the city. Poplar Bluff is approximately 150 miles south of St. Louis, 150 miles north of Memphis, 150 miles northeast of Little Rock, and about 330 miles southeast of Kansas City. The Poplar Bluff R-I School District is a member of the Greater Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce.
